"YOUR KIDS ARE SO RESPECTFUL AND POLITE. I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'RE FROM THE SLUMS!"
The kiddos at a.k.a. HOPE weren't always the happy, confident bunch that you often see reflected in our photos and videos. ALL of them, at one point or another, were actually quite angry, shellshocked, quarrelsome, untrusting, shy, insecure, embarrassed, somber, stoic - and any number of other unhappy adjectives - living in a state of near hopelessness. They had no dreams. They had no concern for the future. To them, getting through this day was the priority.
It can not be overstated just how important your impact has been on the life of a.k.a. HOPE and charity efforts around the world. The simple fact that you're reading this blog probably means that you have supported a.k.a. HOPE in some capacity since its inception in 2013. You’ve followed us on Facebook, liked our Instagram photos, donated money, and some of you have even become roomies to these incredible children! We have absolutely felt your love, and we can not thank you enough.
I have become increasingly aware that there are many of you out there that don’t really know what we are trying to accomplish here at a.k.a. HOPE. Through several conversations and emails I’ve fielded in the recent past, I’m realizing that we have done a poor job of communicating to both you our supporters and the general public. And as you may or may not know, if our closest supporters can’t articulate and connect with the vision for our program, they’re not going to be willing to advocate on our behalf.
